As I write this series, I enjoy realizing just how different each professional’s approach is as they work toward a successful career in any field be it business, broadcast, philanthropy or otherwise. It’s inspiring to see how everyone can forge their own path with the right amount of drive, passion and of course creativity. This month’s focus, Richard Branson, definitely doesn’t lack any of those ingredients.
Branson in Business
As a child, it seems like people often wrote off the bold, but bored boy. Due to battling dyslexia and a school system that hadn’t adjusted to work through it with him, Branson and his parents realized formal education wasn’t for him (much the opposite of my prior focus, Warren Buffett.)
Instead, he dove head first into business. Beginning with a mail-order record service based on his passion for music, he quickly saw success and pursued additional entrepreneurship opportunities. Virgin Records led to Virgin Atlantic Airlines over time amounting to Virgin Group, a multinational corporation venture capital conglomerate. He is now one of the wealthiest men in the world.
His approach tends to be unconventional. He never shies away from a new strategy or means for connecting with consumers and like-minded individuals. I think this coincides with Branson’s desire to educate and assist others in finding their passions. Branson doesn’t keep his ‘secret sauce’ hidden from the public. Rather, he acts eager to share. Spending time as a Shark Tank Guest Judge, assisting young entrepreneurs to evolve their ideas and products to the next level, and writing a host of books to share his methods, Branson makes it his mission to help others follow their passions.
Richard Branson also often discusses his goals to leave the world better than when he was born. This mission and motivation are instilled into all of his business ventures and his lifestyle in general. As Branson said, “I never started out in business to make money – I wanted to create products that made a difference in people’s lives. The same is true today. In my opinion, there’s nothing quite like the gift of giving. When you see first-hand the impact it can have, it becomes the best feeling in the world.”

By the numbers, it’s clear we should all strive to do business like Branson.
